A drunk gentleman came in to ED and asked me "How much for a massage and handjob"?

I was working the Saturday night shift in ED. This older man comes in and asks me really loudly "How much for a massage and a handjob?" Then everyone started laughing! Including the senior doctor. I went bright red... I know he was drunk but what did he mean by that? Was I dressed like a prostitute or something? Were they laughing at me or him? I'm an intern by the way.

I think it's pretty clear what he meant. That won't be the largest gap you'll see between your social skill set and that of your patients, so you may as well get used to it. Just wait until you're in private practice, and your answer will be reflected in the Press-Gainey scores that determine whether you keep your job!

Obviously you're young. You're going to see EVERYTHING, and I do mean EVERYTHING in your medical career. You'll eventually get to the point that stuff like this doesn't bother you in the slightest. Get past it. More fun and games await you tomorrow. Wait until the old man grabs you by your koo-chee some night. That's coming, too. And it's not just the old men. When I was a young male nurse, I had a 95 year old woman grab my privates. They do stuff like that sometimes.

I sympathize. The ER of a general hospital can be a raunchy place. Almost five decades ago when I was working in the pediatric ER, my future wife came through the partition separating the adult ER and begged me to change places with her. She said, "I'll work up three kids if you take care of one dirty old man."

Your character was just an obscene drunk. Don't go on a guilt trip.
