A first-timer considering Perla, how do I optimize first experience? (And other questions)

I've never been to a MP of this sort before. How do I increase the probability that I come away with expectations being exceeded?

I have been reading over these forums, and have heard a wide array of crazy stories of what CAN go on... but also a lot of YMMV messages as well...

Any advice? Is it more likely that a newb gets eaten alive by the sharks and given just the bare minimum? or the opposite... they can smell new blood in the water and would rather give you something to make you want to come back?
