Rosetta stone is worthless FYI. My last spanish class at the local CC made us complete some 50-odd sections of that crap. Absolutely no help. Take a spanish class get some of th basics down, buy a spanish/english dictionary and use it to buff your vocabularly. Then speak what you have learned as often as possible, zona trips really are great for practice.

In Puerto Rico the spanish killed all the male indians, and fucked all the female Indians, in facgt erasing the local population. in Mexico there were too many. Look at the Mexican language with all the X, J, CH and other sounds that were so unmanageble it required the Spanish to add new letters to the alphabet.

Oh, come now, OC. That is like saying that we speak American, not English. There are many, many dialects of Spanish in Mexico just as there are many, many dialects of English in the States. I can not for the life of me understand many Americans from South Carolina or some parts of Texas, can you? The same is true for Mexico. I find it much easier to understand the Spanish of the Mexicans in Central Mexico than in the northern parts of Mexico. They seem to speak much more clearly to me. (I haven't been to any of the other parts of Mexico.) Maybe AmigoMio will chime in.

Supposedly in the U.K., the dialects of English change dramatically from one neighborhood to another.

Just so you know they actually speak mexican in Mexico not Spanish. Never have I heard a language so bastardized. Even worse that the Aussies English.

I have a bluray player and the blurays now many languages. I am learning portuguese using american movies with subtitles. It takes time but in a few months you will be a pro.

When I was learning French (to try to get a job with the govt in Canada) I went through Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone and Michel Thomas.
The first two are pretty near useless compared to Michel Thomas.

This was for French, but it probably applies to Spanish as well. So Id say

You see how that sounds kinda ridiculous but you'll often hear the same thing that it's better to learn Spanish how they speak in Spain because it's more proper.

They both have their place. I agree with you regarding practicing, practicing, practicing. That is the only way to become conversant. However, the grammar and writing that you learn in a class at a community college is also very valuable. Here in California, the community colleges are excellent and cheap ways to get a university level Spanish class. My first professor knew 8 languages and was such a great resource. He could even speak Latin. He had traveled throughout Latin America (and the world) and would tell us fabulous stories. I was bummed that he did not teach the higher level Spanish classes. But one of the professors in the second-year Spanish classes was this beautiful Mexicana with dark, black hair. She looked a bit like the popular SG named Gaby (with the umbrella by the parking lot across from the alley on Constitution). I would get such a hard-on during class thinking about her -- it was a major distraction. (This was just before I had ventured into la Zona.)

The problem with the college courses is that you do not get much time to practice speaking. One semester, we had a group of students that would meet to practice conversation. One half hour would be in Spanish, the second half hour would be in English. There are also adult schools which have large English-as-a-Second-Language programs and they are usually happy to have outsiders come to class to practice English. Sometimes they will reciprocate and speak some Spanish for some of the time.

I have had more success with listening to the CDs in my car than the computer programs. I get very bored very quickly sitting in front of the computer and very soon find myself checking out the monger sites. Have any of you tried www.livemocha.com? It is much like Rosetta Stone but a whole lot cheaper, especially if you just use the free stuff. I got bored quickly with it.

I, for one, have been curious about this too.

From my research, I've concluded that language learning software coupled with lots of practice would be much better than any community college class you could take.

My most recent ex-girlfriend spoke spanish flawlessly, I wish I would have taken her offers to teach me spanish more seriously. She was always a bit of a dingbat though, so I wasn't sure if I could trust her, which is also the problem with having anyone teach you a particular language; there's much more than meets the eye. People who speak natively are probably going to use a lot of slang words that will only serve to confuse you, the way I look at it, if you're going to learn a language, at least learn it formally before you practice with a native. Note: by "formally" I don't mean a community college class - from what I understand, those aren't particularly useful unless you want to do a bunch of writing in that particular language.

Where your formal education comes from is up to you. I've heard that the best method is to try all the different methods out there, then pick which one you felt the most comfortable with. I would start with the more recommended language learning tools such as Rosetta Stone and work my way around the system, sampling various softwares.

Once you've got your feet wet, the only thing that will help you is immersion, practice, and more practice and immersion. Good luck brother, I'll be joining you soon in the language learning adventure.

Practicing with a Spanish girlfriend can be very fun, it is not like taking classes.

Living in a Spanish country forces you to learn just to be able to go shopping , watch TV, or go out to eat, so you learn quickly.

Immersion has to be the best way but that's just common knowledge.

Sometimes you can down load "Pimsleur" Spanish for free off "limewire or some music downloading site, somethings the whole 30 CDs and for sure a couple of them.

You can also get them off Ebay used for about $100 dollars.

I understand that "Tell Me More Spanish Performance" is rated higher than either Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone, but I never sampled it.

Practice Practice Practice and it's sure nice to practice on a nice young Mexican chica.

I have never used it, but others have said that it is pretty good. But there are many good choices. I like the ones that you can put onto your mp3 and listen while you are driving. I have gotten good use from Learning-Spanish-In-Your-Car. It has really helped me with the verb conjugations which is one of the most important parts of speaking. One of the best is Pimsleur's but the modules are very, very expensive. Their web site lets you download one or two sample audio lectures and you can tell they are serious and know what they are doing. But I ain't spending that kind of money. I'd much rather use that kind of money for mongering sessions! I hope to check them out of the library soon.

This is the absolute best choice but it is not practical for many. If you do find yourself in a foreign country for any length of time, you will learn the language fastest, especially after finding a girlfriend who can help you learn the language on a pillow.


Probably one of the best ways to learn but again, not practical for many, is to take a job in a Mexican restaurant where all the workers speak Spanish. Within two weeks, you will be fairly able to communicate or else they would already have fired your ass muy rapido!

I must admit, I see seasoned Mongers & Local's holding lengthy
conversations with Chica's in the booths and get a little
jealous

Envious from the standpoint of... Breaking the ice, putting her
at-ease, acting generally interested in her and/or what she has to say, but
mainly having the option of getting her to "laugh"

All thee above are 'contributors' in gaining a possible GFE once you head
upstairs (my ultimate goal )


So to really learn and grasp the language, I've heard the following methods.

a) Rosetta Stone cd's
b) Take classes @ your local community college
c) Get a Girlfriend or Spouse who is a native speaker
d) Spend a year or so living in that inherent Country
