Case Study - vomiting blood/blood in stools

Hi there,

I need a bit of advice. I'm currently training to be a reflexologist and one of my good friends is a case study for me. I've given him twotreatments so far, and he had a lot of tender points on his feet, in particular :

ascending colon on right foot
small intestine both feet
stomach
kidney/adrenals

After thefirst treatment he told me that he vomited blood two nights later, I was obviously very concerned and advised him to seek medical advice but he won't go to seea doctor and seemedadamant it was unrelated to the reflexology. I agreed to give him asecond treatment and the same reflex points came up, he said he felt wonderful immediately afterwards, but he rang me last week and said he had blood in his stools a couple of days after the treatment. He still won't go to see a doctor and wants to carry on with treatment but I am not sure if I am doing him some harm somehow and feel helpless as he won't seek medical advice.

Should I refuse to give him any more treatments unless he goes to see a doctor? Could I have loosened some sort of 'blockage' which has led to this bleeding?

Hi Amanda,

I would definitely be very wary. I personally would have to say please go to the doctor to get checked out else I really don't feel able to continue treatment. Sometimes people get a little bleeding with things like haemmaroids , but he has vomited blood too I don't like the sound of that. Try not to panic him, though I'm surprised he isn't panicking, I would be.

I strongly agree with Smooky. Something tells me that it wasn't your treatment but this person may already had this symptom therefore he came to you? It could be one of the hospital superbug C. Diff, symptom of cancer or many others.I would say blood in vomitting/stool isserious.He definitely needs to be checked out by a doctor asap.

Hi Amanda

You are right to be wary, and I agree with what Smooky says. Were I in your shoes I would stop treatment when a client is presenting with such worrying symptoms, until these have been investigated. I hope your friend will be OK. Reflexology cannot cause harm, so I hope you aren't worrying that your treatment has caused this to happen.

I know you want to help your friend, but the others are right, he has to take responsibilit for himself and see a doctor. It's possible that this has been going on a while and perhaps he's not been able to tell anyone. Be cautious, offer support, at the very least wait a while until symptoms have totally and definitely passed... this could be a long wait.. if he even tells you that they are ongoing..
