I thought a new thread would be usefull, as many of us travel a lot and have had frequent IT problems over the years.
The major one we have in China of course is the censorship of the Servers.
Not just porn but even the BBC is blocked - what would the Queen say??
Access:
If you are having trouble accessing websites within China, there are 2 main ways of getting through to blocked websites.
The easiest is using a Proxy Server
Try this:
Open Internet Explorer
Select "Tools"
Select "Internet Options"
Select "Connections"
Select whatever you are using to connect to the internet for example "LAN Settings"
Tick "Use a proxy server ......"
Type in the address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Type in the Port: xxxx
Now click OK and OK
Some will already be blocked, so keep trying until you get one that isn't blocked.
You are now connected via a proxy server that is not routed through the China Net so you can access a lot of blocked websites (but not necessarily all).
You should do a search for new proxy server addresses every day just in case the Netwatchers block the proxy server you are using, you just change the address and port to your new server.
Attached are some of the latest proxies - I've not checked them so maybe they work, maybe not:
IP address and port

A more complicated way, but definitely better is using 2 pieces of Freeware called "Tor" and "Privoxy"
http://tor.eff.org
http://privoxy.org
Download them and install them on your computer and they use an "Onion Router" technique, so making your computer untraceable.
I can send these files to anyone if they are interested
