Crews respond to ‘incident’ at Pickering Nuclear Generating Station

The Ontario government says there has been some sort of “incident” at Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, prompting them to send a mass mobile alert to people as far away as Toronto.
The province said an incident was reported at the station, off of Montgomery Park Road in Pickering, sometime on Sunday and emergency crews are at the power plant.
“There has been NO abnormal release of radioactivity from the station,” the alert read. “People near the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station DO NOT need to take any protective actions at this time.”

The power plant is run by Ontario Power Generation and has been in service since 1971. It is slated to be decommissioned in 2024.

The text of the alert said it applied to those within 10 kilometres of the station but cell phone users in Ottawa, near Windsor and north of the GTA told CP24 they received the alert.
A spokesperson for OPG told CP24 he had no additional information to provide.
Durham Regional Police also said they had no information to provide.
The Pickering Fire Department said it was not called to the plant and did not know why the alert was issued.

If there was a serious accident in Pickering, it could lead to 26,000+ people directly affected leading to some type of nuclear cancer related illness and $125 billion in lost home values.

Pickering is surrounded by more people than any other nuclear station in North America. According to the Ontario Clean Air Alliance; in case of an accident; more than 650,000 people and 154,000 homes would have to be evacuated for 30 to 100 years in the GTA.
Yes Toronto, (specially Scarborough); would be greatly affected. so if it blows up as OP puts it, you can look forward to having a great number of glowing MPAs.

Low level fallout would stretch from west of London to the southwestern corner of Algonquin Park. All of Pickering plus parts of Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Aurora and Scarborough would need to be evacuated. Major highways, including highways 401, 407 and 404 and major rail lines would now run through no-go zones

As for it being a "False Alarm", I had a friend working in Pickering 20 years ago, he use to comment how at least 3 - 4 times a year there would be "Accidental" release of nuclear waste, but the amounts were too small to report. Since the plant is very old and schedule to be decommissioned in 2024, is possible those amounts are larger than before and someone panic, thus pushing the alert button.

At any rate; sending that alarm is, at least in my opinion; very irresponsible, What are you gonna do in case of an accident? Hide underground fot the next 100 years ???

Iran would not attack Canada, their beef is with USA. Unless their geography is so fuck up they can tell the difference between the 2 countries

I think the text alert was sent to cell phones all over Southern Ontario.

You're naive if you think that the Iranian people know that Canada is separate from the United States. People from all over that part of the world including Europe and Asia think that Canada and United States are one and the same.

The proof of this is the Ukrainian Airline attack. They knew that there were Canadians on board. That's why when you hear about travel warnings to Americans, the same should apply to Canadians as well. We look the same, we talk the same, we wear the same T-shirts and ball caps. We even root for the same baseball and football teams. They can't see any difference between us from the naked eye.

Names don't mean anything. First things customs looks at is citizenship. The majority of the people on that flight were Canadians.

You can't assume all people have masters degrees in geography or are as smart as you or me. That's just plain foolish and asking for trouble.
