Getting mentioned in the paper

Hey there,

As many of you know, I am moving into an old building in my downtown. I had dug up info and pics on it at the local historical society.

There is a womanin her mid 80's who writes local historical stories about the people and memories of the by gone days of our town. Her sunday column in the local paper has quite a readership. I emailed her with some questions about my building, as she has written a column in the paper mentionin it about a year ago.

This past afternoon, she calls me on my cell phone. It is the first time she has contacted me. She is working on her story for Sunday and the column will be a hodge podge of info, but she will be mentioning the building and the fact that I haved moved in my business.

I referred to my business as a 'massage clinic.' She said, "oh, is that what you call it?" I wonder what she would have put in the paper if I hadnt referred to it as that, maybe a 'massage parlor?" Cause I aint no salon, or a spa, certainly not a parlor!

Maybe it is a generational thing. My landlord is in his early 60's, and he has also referred to it as a parlor. t013 We gotta have a talk.

It is definitely a generational thing! Go ahead and have the talk. Don't be offended if it doesn't "take", lol. I'd go at it from a sort of humorous perspective - "massage parlors are those baaaaaad places I don't even TALK about", or something like that. Make the impression STICK.

When my dad referred to me as a masseuse, I said, "Dad, a masseuse is a person you find in a place of ill repute!" He was slightly embarrassed, and never made that mistake again LOL.

That generation can be stubborn (guess we all are!) - they need a reason to change their terminology!

I've had that problem too - with younger people even. I was recently featured in the local newspaper as well, (the reporter was in her 30's) and during the interview she asked what I call myself and started to say "masseuse?" She also had no idea what to call the client. I was quick to correct her! But, of course you can't write the article for them... so as hard as I tried, of course the title of the article was "Rubbing people the right way" (cringe) I hate the word RUB! But from an average newspaper reader perspective, it was fine... at least she correctly titled me MASSAGE THERAPIST!
