Gilberts disease

Please can some one let me know if it is advisable to do a massage on someone with Gilberts disease, as I am doing ITEC massage and A&P and one of my case studies that I have chosen has been diagnosed with this disease. I have looked it up on the internet and it says it is a harmless condition involving the liver, caused by the liver not handling yellow pigment 'bilirubin' properly. But im still unsure as to wether or not this could be a contra indication to massage.

I might have made a mistake calling it Gilberts disease it is actually called Gilberts Syndrome and im really hoping that there is someone out there that can tell me if its ok to do a full body massage on some one with this problem

Hi Amanda, I have nevercome across Gilbert'sas a massage contraindication and as you say it is a harmless condition in itself, so I see no reason why massage should be a problem. However you are right to be cautious. If you're unsure about any condition ask the client how they have responded to similar treatments in the past, perhaps carry out a short, gentle treatment first to see how they cope with itand perhaps contacttheir GP. Have you asked your tutor what she thinks?

I have gilberts syndrome myself! Yes it is a harmless condition, whereby the liver doesnt properly metabolise bilirubin. Sometimes leading to a slighty jaundiced look! It is not a massage condraindication!
