MANHATTAN, Kan. (KSNT) - Kansas is one of just two states where the massage industry is not regulated. Now some Manhattan city leaders are trying to change that.
In June the KBI raided massage parlors in Topeka and Lawrence for sex trafficking. That prompted a conversation about the lack of regulation in the massage industry.
Now Manhattan leaders are proposing an ordinance that would regulate massage businesses and their licensing.
Kiel Mangus is the Manhattan Assistant City Manager. He said this would be a step forward for public safety.
"I think they can know that when you go get your massage you know that that person has an education, a background, has been background checked, you know criminal background check," Mangus said. "Health and safety type things, and know that where they run their clinic has been inspected and taken care of the way it should be."
Mangus said that while Manhattan hasn't seen an issue with massage practices yet, this ordinance is a way to stay ahead of the issue. This is the beginning of the process, but the commissioners hope to have something concrete passed in a couple of months.
