PALM DESERT, CA— Massage Envy storefronts in Palm Desert and La Quinta were shuttered this week, to the disappointment of both employees and customers.
Arriving customers found a note and locked doors at the locations in the Desert Crossing Shopping Center in Palm Desert and the 79485 CA-111 location in La Quinta.
Though the corporate website says both sites are "temporarily closed," a sign on the storefront, released by KESQ, says the reason is the "increasing pressures of California regulations, labor, and insurance cost."
"We worked tirelessly to remain open but have made the difficult decision to close our doors," the franchise owner wrote. The business's Instagram pages and other social media mentions were removed.
Massage Envy corporate headquarters has shared that credits can be used at any franchise location, with the closest being Murrieta and Temecula.
According to a letter obtained by KESQ, the owner of the Palm Desert and La Quinta Massage Envy franchise locationsdecided to close them with little explanation or notice. Employees told KESQ that they had less than 24 hours' notice that their jobs had ended.
Corporate ensured members of both Coachella Valley locations that they would not be charged for the duration of the closure. It is yet to be determined if a new independent business owner will be found to reopen the sites.
