Surprisingly enough, they're probably one of the safest places you can enter. The girls inside know exactly why you're there. You know why you're there. No worries about being over-charged for drinks, services/goods you didn't order etc. If you visit one of the more out-of-the-way shops in a side-street and you're a Westerner, chances are the girls are completely taken by surprise by your visit and ripping you off will be the last thing on their minds. They're just not set-up to rob people unlike some of the coffee shop/art gallery scams in the tourist areas.
Take usual precautions: don't go there with a wallet full of cash. Don't walk in if a couple of policemen are standing outside the front door etc. Show the girls respect and try to speak a few words of Mandarin.
Unlike some establishments in China, these shops aren't set-up to rip foreigners off. I've found that the dingier, and the farther away from the main tourist streets they are, the safer I feel.
Don't pay more than Y200 FS or Y100 R&T.
Lots of upside, not much downside with these shops. Scout around and see a girl you like inside, then go in. Good chance to practice your Mandarin skills. For less than $30, you haven't got much to lose. You may just have a good time
