Hey all,

Anyone else a little frustrated with the 20% increase in pricing?

I'm sorry but $140-$160 for 1hr (including tip) is not good value for me.

Is that still out there?

I've never had it for 100
But depending on the place 40 for just he is what I always get.
Most places I go to I'm doing a nude bodyslide and 69 and I only pay 180.

I have two women I see on a somewhat regular basis that charge me $100 all-in for being a long-term regular customer. Once in a while I slip them a large tip (say an extra $100 or $150) as a thank you for keeping things affordable for me. I'm not interested in FS extras, the agreement I have with my GF is massages with HE only.

With home based independents there is more flexibility and more possibilities for reasonable pricing in the 100-120 range with an hour massage and a handy. But there needs to be a relationship of sorts built with repeat visits.

In a shop environment the challenge is the so called fixed hourly rate. If it's set at 90 or 85 or 80, it doesn't give the masseuse much breathing room. A masseuse who is an anchor masseuse with loyal clients of her own can negotiate a much better deal for herself and then pass on a great deal to her favourite repeat clients, but this is a rare thing.

But to just walk in to a regular Asian massage shop with no relationships built, would never expect the 100-120 (one hour) price range to work.

Ideally one needs to focus on whom you want to visit on a frequent basis and then communicate and create the right win-win situation. And the favourable pricing. Requires effort.

when it was 100-120 i'm pretty sure most guys were like "remember when it was 60-80"? sitting around talking about prices doesn't change anything. we all wish there was more "value" but i've learned that us guys don't share the same opinions on value even so its useless. we just wish we could get the services we love for as little as possible.

Value and perception of value is personal and based on each individual. The point is that clients with some clear focus, a clear idea of what they truly enjoy, and with a dedicated budget can come up with arrangements that are a win win for both parties, masseuse and client. But it requires some effort and some personal exploration and research (and that does require some spending). Board reviews are useful when they help us from totally wasting our time, and money. And the board is helpful in getting to know two or three others who share similar tastes and ideas

I voluntary upped my fee to my regulars. Being a landlord myself, I understand some of the issues faced by spas. I had a chat with one regular who may be forced to close down the spa when her lease expires. The landlord is actually actively encouraging her to move out sooner so that he can raise the rent sooner to new tenants; the landlord is citing his own issues, i.e. rents not enough to cover new mortgage payments. She may be returning to home base or outright retires. Generally speaking the cost of paying commercial rent, utilities, licenses are simply too much, unless you have a legion of girls working, it is not worth it.

It is a business, depending on how "nice" the spa is, it may take upwards of $600-800 per day to cover fixed costs like rent, utilities etc. Not to mention the $100k or more in leasehold improvements. If you only have two or three girls working for a few sessions each, the $80 base fee is only enough to cover rent, they take home nothing. You need a legion of girls or a lot of extras to make it work. I sense that we are going to see a rate hike among spas, a thinning of spa selections and a move of more home base operators as existing leases expire. I for one would hate the rate hikes but would welcome more home base operators.

I am all in support of more home based spas. And cooperatives where 2 or 3 masseuses work together from one home location. If they are well managed it is a win win for everyone.

Like all trades, surprisingly how low prices can be when you have no commercial rent, no licensing fee, no taxes, no insurance... Just pay a little bit of residential rent and pocket the rest.

Another problem for some of these ladies is that they require a stable "employer" for banking purposes. Really hard to get a mortgage when you operate a home based cash only tax-free business. It is also very hard to create the illusion of legitimacy for your family/friends when you operate at home. I wish there is a magic bullet to solve all of the ladies' problems.

From a tax perspective it is more beneficial if they rent a house, as rental costs are tax deductible (business use portion) whereas mortgage costs in Canada are not (if this is their principal residence). It helps if they are using 3 bedrooms out of five for massage purposes... other ladies joining the coop.
