I agree, paying can be a good option for the short term visitor, particularly for an older guy with limited Japanese skills and knowledge of Tokyo. Roppongi is way overrated if you are over 30. Jgirls are generally friendly but many of those who speak English see you more as an unpaid English teacher than a potential short term boyfriend. Over 30 , dont speak Japanese and with limited time? some people prefer a sure thing. is all a matter of preference. in my experience, men coming here on a limited business trip don't have the time to go out searching for the clubs, then play hit or miss with the local girls. advice from the expats, while helpful, comes from their own trial and error, which again isn't something that a 2 week visitor doesn't necessarily have the time to mess about with.

Why look for an escort?

Get yourself around town and you should be able to pick up J girls without any problems. If you speak Japanese it should be even easier.

If you don't have enough time, just head down to Roppongi and start scoping out the clubs. Just avoid those African touts, those bars they try to lure you in are just rip off joints.
