I've been in Massage school for almost 3 months now and I'm concerned about a fellow student. He passes himself off to others as professional and mature but he talks about all the "pretty girls" he massages in the clinic (were required to do 45 public massages in our clinic to graduate) The clinic should be run professionally just as any massage/spa/outfit should. After all the creepy things he has said... he tells some of the class today that he had massaged a female client totally naked and didn't tell her to get under the sheets (just because he wanted to look at her) KNOWING that's the law here in Ohio.... He massaged her totally nude prone and supine. If she was fine with being nude great but what about the other girls that unknowingly get booked with him? Is this something I should just ignore because it's not my business? Or could this become more of a sexual predator thing? Im not the only one creeped out by him...most the girls in class are!

We're trying to show the public that massage is a clean and legitimate therapeutic business, and creepers like him roaming around do not help us shake the stigma that has surrounded the industry since times immemorial. We can't let people like him hurt our image. We're also protecting the public if we stop these people early in their careers.

That's another problem! So many view men as perverted because something as nurturing as massage therapy is "womenz werk". You know, "what business do men have in the industry if they're not out to grope female clients?" This mentality won't change with men like your classmate in the industry.

I agree with pueppi. Talk to your instructors-- at least one of them-- about this. Make it a hypothetical "what if there was a male student who was...?" question. If they say not to worry about it, then you're in the wrong school (and maybe the whole school should be reviewed, for allowing such behavior). If they indicate that they truly do care (as they should), then let them know of your concerns.

I have recently been approached by a woman who says she was violated by a male MT. She has taken him and his employer (I think) to court, and is undergoing therapy for her trauma. She needs help feeling comfortable getting massage from ANYone again. This is NOT something to be taken lightly. People with this sort of tendency should not be granted license to touch....

You should definitely bring this up with someone at the school. Even if he is making stuff up thinking he's impressing people that would make me uncomfortable to have him work on me in class. He shouldn't be talking that way, it's not professional at all. If he is in fact behaving this way he should NOT be able to graduate! That's terrible that he's taking advaneforum.xxxe of these girls. Who knows what else he might do. That's dangerous. And lets not forget he's making your school and all LMT's look bad! Please don't let someone like this behave this way!

Actually, in Ohio, students may ONLY massage clients who are wearing underwear and (if female) a bra, in addition to being draped. This student could lose his chance at EVER being licensed in this state if the Medical Board ever hears about his conduct.

Where did you see that info? At my massage school, it was recommended that clients wore underwear, but we never told females they needed to keep a bra on. I've never heard that or read it anywhere. Whats your source?


And to AmberW, please please please review this student!!! As others have said, its definitely your business what other MTs or students are doing that could smear the reputation of massage.

Not only is this student making all male MTs look bad (potentially), but it could possibly ruin your reputation as well if this female client tells someone, they point out how wrong the situation was, she says which school it was done at, that info can get spread pretty fast, and next thing you know you're looking to get hired and someone finds out you want to the school that this male student went to! Who knows what they will think of your ethics? Since you obviously went to a school that is allowing such behavior, known to the faculty or not. It all comes around!

I did a lot of searching and couldn't find anything specific on Ohio's State Medical Board site (http://www.med.ohio.gov) but did find this reference on a local attorney's website:

1.3.6. Massage Therapists shall maintain professional drapery with patients at all times to insure warmth and a respect for the patient’s privacy. Professional draping refers to the covering of a patient with a sheet or towel except for the face and the specific area of the body being immediately treated. Genital areas shall be covered at all times. Draping shall be discussed with the patient prior to treatment so the patient is empowered to request draping which is comfortable. The Massage Therapist shall be fully clothed at all times.

It's what I was told in my school (SHI), and students at another school in the area (Cincinnati School of Medical Massage) were told the same. I don't normally wear bras, and actually had to go out and purchase one for school! Honestly, though, I can't find a reference either!

It wouldn't surprise me if it were an old law and local schools simply hadn't been notified of the change. All of our instructors have been teaching a LONG time, and can be behind the times when it comes to some things! It was very much hammered into our heads that, because we had not yet had our background checks completed by the State Medical Board, we were to be quite strict with clients about wearing underwear, or risk losing our chance at becoming licensed once we did graduate.

Just seeing this, but should I have ever found out said student USED to behave in this manner, I would be still very uncomfortable having this person work on me. Even if he had changed. I try to be open-minded and look to the good in people, but that would really worry me and make me jumpy and alert instead of relaxing me, which is a major reason for getting a massage.
