Sore hand from giving massage. Tips on how to relieve the pain?

My sister is nearly at the end of her massage therapy training, and has a sore hand from overuse. Her instructors have recommended a special cream for that, but I'm wondering if she should cut back on what she's doing. She says that she has to complete a certain number of massages before she can work on her own and begin getting paid for it. If she works through the pain, will her hand be all right, or should she slow down and give herself a rest?
