Is it custom to tip as well on top of the room fee and whatever service you receive? If so, generally how much?

The majority don't expect anything. As long as we pay them the standard rate and most important treat them right.


Can you afford leaving a little extra for a job well done? Then, do it.

How much? $10, $20, ..... $100. As I said, whatever. It's not like next time, they would spit in your food before serving it on your table!

UNlike taxi drivers and waitstaff, MPA's get a good fat buck from every customer. They may not have as many during a shift as we imagine or they'd like, but that is not our concern. The fee we negociated and paid is a decent return for the service and the going rate in the biz.

A sweetner, added on top is a nice gesture, but it should be that—a gesture of appreciation—not an expected and significant chunk of the fee. Think of it this way: keep it in the range of some flowers or candy, and your motivation to go that extra mile when you say, "thanks" should come from gratitude for her better than ordinary attentions, not from trying to fit in witha buncha hairy old guys.

At one point an MPA was telling me about some client who would give her a $300 tip after every session.

I told her:

1.) The tip wasn't about her it was about HIS ego.
IE) he was playing alpha male by showing how much money he could throw around.

2.) He was priming her for full service.

IMO there is simply no need to be throwing around more than an extra $20 - $40, and that's for outstanding service.

Guys wouldn't THINK of paying their mechanic $150 for a $50 oil change, so there are obviously other factors at play for the big tippers.

It's the customary thing to do, but ONLY if you decide that the service or experience warranted an extra gratuity. It's not mandatory, and I don't believe the MPA would be offended if you didn't tip her.

I usually add a tip to the fee, only if I've truly felt the experience was amazing; or if I really liked and clicked with the MPA.

I've never gone to a MP but I always assumed that tipping was the standard practice (like a tip at a restaurant regardless of service).
Can you get away by never tipping and going to the same MP or having the same MPA? Aren't you going to be remembered as the guy who doesn't tip?

I think the MPA would appreciate having a consistent regular who didn't tip, than a one-time client who did. Repeat business is their bread and butter.

my tip is my repeat business...but of course, once unchartered territories are explored...a "token of gratitude" should be in order.

Tipping at a resto is part of the waiter's base comp. Not the same at most MPs where the MPA keeps the entire service fee.

I wish someone paid me extra just for doing my job.

I don't think it is. waiter's get paid by the hour. tips depend on customers discretion. they can serve 10 tables and not get tips from those. or serve 1 table and a huge tip. MPA's get an average of $60 - $80 per bodyslide. waiters get paid by the hour for doing their jobs they get tips for doing an awesome one. now if let's say a waitress from a restaurant can manage to give me a HJ, i may as well pay her extra for doing "the job" if we get caught, i might hand the manager an extra $40 (room fee).

Tipping most certainly is a part of a server's (waiter) basic compensation. Here in Ontario there is a separate lower minumum wage just for servers. The government expects that they will routinely be tipped. I have been to bars in Quebec where the servers are not paid anything. They rely soley on tips to survive.

While it is true that tips are dependent on the customer's discretion this is the level of tip. Unless the service was bad a tip should be given. Just try not tipping routinely at your favourite restaurant or bar and see what sort of service you get. By the way, at that bar in Quebec we tipped at the standard Ontario schedule of 10 to 15% and were informed that if we did not tip more we would not be getting another drink. We asked why and then found out the guy wasn't getting paid and he wanted to reserve his section for good tippers.

These guidelines vary by market but you need to know them.

whilst i find your argument valid, i don't think it's the case here in ontario. why i know this? my ex-SO worked as a server for years and this has been an ongoing hustle. Her take home tips vary from day to day plus she gets paid by the hour. Mind you her tips of course are higher than her hourly wage. That is why it's called a tip. It is a token. It nice to get an extra cash for good service but you shouldn't expect it and avoid dissappointment.

Here is the Ontario Ministry of Labour website with minimum wages posted. As you can see anyone who serves liquor has a lower minimum wage. I believe that they include the liquor caveat because many fast food servers don't get/aren't allowed to accept tips.

The minimu wage is lower because liquor servers are expected to get tips.

True, but you are obviously looking at this situation at the Gov's POV. They may have basis for this, but I'm looking at it at the servers point of view.

So am I. I know a number of servers very well including several of my best friends and I can tell you they expect to be tipped always if the service was good. If you don't tip you can be guaranteed that they will be complaining about you to the other servers as soon as you've left. I have heard this done. Also, don't expect to be treated as well as other customers should you ever be dumb enough to go back.

But you wouldn't want to repeat w/ her anyway. Servers depend on tips as a wage, of course they'll resent undertippers. But MPAs don't.

I've never felt any of the vibe you fear.

So true. Since servers in the bar business are actually making less than minimum wage, your tip is almost an act of charity since they could really use the money. At $100 per half hour (if you actually get 30 minutes of time) it's safe to say MPAs are not in the same boat.
