I’m saying Mitch played out the chess moves in his head and saw no path to 17 votes and the cost might have been that if he voted his conscience and persuaded some other Republicans as well it would rip the party apart and the Democrats could control the Presidency, Senate and House for a generation. Remember, Mitch was still only 1 vote out of the 17 needed even if he voted guilty it wouldn’t have changed the outcome.
