Cleaning the surface interior of a hot tub/jacuzzi is not enough.
Unfortunately, when the tub is emptied of water, the contents
in the water, (hair, dead skin, bacteria, etc..) remain inside
the jets. So although the tub is cleaned with disenfectant
on the outside, the harmful matter remains in the jets. So
when the jets are turned on again, they shoot out the old
matter that has been sitting inside the jets.
Of course, professional cleaning is the best alternative
to keeping a jacuzzi clean and safe, but, a cheeper, not better alternative, is that you can also fill the hot tub up with hot water only and some bleach and turn on the jets for 15-20 minutes and let the water run through. This should
be done weekly.
I looked into this several years ago when I worked at a spa
with hot tubs/jacuzzi. There are actually many website's with
health studies/ investigative reports etc..on the dangers
of improperly cared for jacuzzi's.
-skin rashes
-infections
-vaginal infections
After what I read about the hot tubs with standing water, like
in the hotels, I would never, ever, get into one of those. They
took a sample of the standing water from a popular hotel
and the bacterial percentage was outrageous. I can't remember
all the other things they found in the water but none of them
were good. Oh yeah, the e-coli % was high from people who did not shower previous to entry. These studies were done in the US. Some people sued a hotel because their daughter contracted a serious disease from the water. They also mentioned, I think,
don't quote me, something about the chlorine being redundant in
the hot water. I don't remember that part to well, but feel free
to correct me if I am incorrect on the chlorine part.
