Government printed which caused inflation so only the rich benefited from that. I wear many hats in the business. I am an owner, a supplier of consumables to spa - both wholesale and directly to some spa owners who I consider are my friends. I am also a hobbyist.

Some perspectives.

1. Not all spa owners are making ridiculous amounts of cash money. Like all businessess, thetop 1 or 2% makes it but the majority are like most small business owners. Just buying themselves a job.

2. Promoting their business. This is not a main street business where you can promote it to friends and family. Heck, some do not even want to disclose they are in this business to start with. Even those who are promotors, they do this on the quiet. Other then KJ who has nothing to lose can openly say he is a promoter of Spas. The rest - no way.

3. Certain owners like Ella, Renee have a list of customers over the years that they have accumalated and so can do a lot of direct marketing.

So to say that both the girls and especially the owners are making so much money that they have to laundry it is a bit of a stretch. Those that were in the business 10 years ago and when houses were more affordable might own their own home. The recent ones - they are certainly not able too. They might have bought houses in China for their family but that is a whole different ballgame. Do the math.

As of now, many owners in the EBC corridor are feeling the stress especially those that had lots of money tied up in their spa re: renovations etc. The uncertainly and the potential loss of income is keeping them up at night.
The girls - not so much as they can and will land somewhere.

Massage Planet accounts for about 15% of a spa business but the noise it generates makes it seems that it accounts for a lot more. I, as an owner has the data to prove it.

Being a business owner has big risks and rewards. If owning a business is that easy, then everybody would have started a business already.

Do I feel sorry for the spa bosses? Not really, they know about the big raid years ago and they chose to start their own businesses.

I am not sure what to make of this, but you clearly have guys like krayjee claiming that a lot of these girls are buying houses, condos and fancy cars. So, his claims aren’t true? How does krayjee get to behave the way he does in the first place? If you were getting paid $100/hr (based on tips alone) with a minimum of 4 clients per day and working 4 days a week at different spas, that’s $1600 a week and close to $6500 a month (all non-taxable income). I’m talking about the lower end of the scale - some of these girls actually make $140-$160 per hour. The girls wouldn’t be in this business if the money wasn’t good. Ocean Motion has some attendants who are Canadian-based (because of this reason). But the overwhelming majority of attendants are Asian - and they clearly have a monopoly. This encouraged the spa owners to set up over a dozen spas in EBC. The well is drying up if you’re seeking sympathy. There are people in this country who have paid thousands in education and credentials only to receive $30/hour if they are lucky - even as professionals.

UNLESS you are saying that the MPAs are paying back the spa owners a huge chunk of their earnings from extras - and that’s just not legal. Either way, the situation is out of balance. krayjee can change his tune as a chameleon, however I can assure you that the locals are getting tired of this crap (regardless of what I think).

Agree with most of what you said...most spa owners and spa girls are not making ridiculous amounts of money. Most can definitely not afford to buy a house these days.

However, it's not just the owners feeling stress, many girls are feeling it too.

And regarding your last point about MassagePlanet traffic, that depends on different factors, including the location, how visible the spa is and how long they have been operating. I can tell you for sure that for many spas it's much more than 15%. Some spas opened up in the middle of nowhere with no advertising other than MP and the majority of their customers came from MP.

To those arguing about their contributions to our economy and not paying taxes etc., keep in mind most spa girls are not good at saving money so most of what they make are definitely going back into the economy...either luxury clothes, purses, cars, casinos, eating out and of course necessities as well.

Sorry, I don’t buy the non-taxable income argument. Now, I think they’ll claim less income than what they actually bring in but still pay something in taxes and not nothing at all. Claim $60K if they really bring in $80K for example. But how is this really that different than waiters, waitresses and bartenders and their tips?

The first reason I think this is that one of the requirements for a Permanent Resident is to pay income taxes. This would cause a problem with the government that I don’t think they want. Second reason is how are they paying rent/mortgage, food, clothing and transportation without a reported source of funds? Not claiming income is a red flag and can draw attention. Even applying for a mortgage requires bank approval and your sources of income need to be laid out. There are other reasons like accessing the ability to invest via TFSA or RRSP, access to CPP and OAS payments in the future, and applying to the Trillium Drug Program for prescription drug assistance for them or their families, if needed. All of that combined makes filing income tax returns the smart move.
