I'm newly licensed and had a job interview at a spa.  They are looking to hire MT's and pay hrly.  Which would be fine with me because being new to the field I rather not deal with the taxes just yet.  The spa is looking to re-build the massage part of the spa.  I would only work part-time, because I have a full-time job that I'm going to continue with (excellent benefits and steady paychecks) that I'm not ready to give up yet.  The spa would like someone to be there and help build clientele.  They only do facials, body wraps and massages and do alot of packages with facials and a hand massage or feet and leg treatment w/feet massage.  Anyways what would be a fair (to both me and the spa) hourly wage?

Tough question.  Most of us work for ourselves or on a commission basis.  I know some did or do hourly at Chiro offices.  What is the rate they charge for a massage?  How busy are you anticipating being?  Would or should the hourly pay rate at a chiros office be the same as the hourly rate at a spa?Geez, I was absolutely no help.  lol

They charge $60/hr $30/hr $10 for hand or feet massage and $1/min for chair massage.  I kind of got the feeling that there aren't that many clients for massage because she said her current therapist perform their massage and then leave, they're not into builing a clientele.   If I get the job and I build up a clientele of regulars than I can always ask for more $.  But starting off, I'm just not sure how much work there will be.  I'm not sure what they charge in the chiropractic offices.

Here's a thought:How about $15/hour + some sort of commission on top... such as if you see more than a certian number of people in a week they give you $36/hour for everyone you saw. Not sure if that makes sense, but I am thinking that gives you enough money to just be sitting around if no one shows up and while you are building your clientele; it doesn't kill the spas' pocket book, and if you actually build the way you want to, they are keeping a little less than half and you can then decide if you want to re-negotiate for a higher perceneforum.xxxe later on.  This is assuming the spa is providing everything except your hands.  (linens, music, lotion, flyers, etc.)Anyway, just an idea.Mmh, in my recent reading of these boards, here is a link that may help you: http://www.massageplanet.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=bus;action=display;num=1090590365

So, you are staying with full time job, Mon-Fri and going to work in the spa weekends and/or evenings?Do they just want to pay you for when you are actually doing a treatment, so if you do a 15 minute chair massage they get $15 for, you only get a quater of your hourly rate if you don't do anything else in that hour, or you get paid for the hour? "Pay hourly" can mean different things to different people, and it can mean "pay by the minute" when someone really wants to push the limits.If you go in for 4 hours and see no-one do you get paid anything?  If you get paid regardless, Texas-gal's range seems sensible to start with, to me.If it is along the lines of you only get paid for hands-on time, you should be asking to get involved with the body wrap side or anything else a MT is allowed to do - stress the better flow with less people coming in and out to do different bits.  Having an extra person come in to do hands while doing a facial is ok because the main therapist is still there, but actually changing the therapist makes it all a bit conveyor belt.  That way you get more skills, sit around less and earn more

Well that spa didn't hire me, but did say she would like to use me as an on-call LMT to help out with spa parties.  I did have another interview somewhere else and they hired me.  They pay 55% of each massage and when I build a clientele I will get more of a %.  So I'm happy with that.  I am keeping my full-time job, because I can't give up the steady pay and excellent benefits just yet. thanks for the replies.
