Snoop, Mitch was trying to keep his fractured party intact that Trump is splitting apart. In 2017 the Republicans has the Presidency, the Senate and the House and in 2021 they lost all 3. Mitch just wants Trump to go away before he does any more damage. He slow played the House not to start a trial before Jan 20th, then said a Trail was irrelevant since he’s out of office. He voted the way he did because he and his party (most of them) that it was Unconstitutional. I call BS on that since they voted on that a few days earlier but he compromised to hold the party together and not fracture it further. But if you draw a hardline at that point (after the vote) and see what he said afterwards that was his way to say “yes” he did it even though he thought the trial should never have happened. I don’t think he voted not guilty out of fear of death or Trump’s base but fear that it would divide the Republican Party further so they could never regain the Senate or House for decades which means all the laws they don’t want will easily pass and the Supreme Court reshaped to be more Libel. He played the long game not the short game. But, then he felt morally obliged to make that speech after the politics were put aside.
