Laid off GM workers should protest the continuing influx of so-called "refugees" from the US, quite possibly the most prosperous nation on Earth. As Trudeau's misguided policies continue to drive businesses out of Canada, putting more people out of work, the question must be asked: why are our taxes continuing to support these "refugees"? Let them deal with the American government on their own. We don't owe them anything, especially if they are only Muslim trash, or parasites, if you think that word is more polite.

In the 80s, there were well over 20,000 GM workers in Oshawa. And prior to the shutdown, around 2,000. Not sure how the refugees of today, impacted the demise of this industry.

You may be right. Or, a GM exec decided that it is best to use labour based out of Mexico as it is significantly cheaper and that cost outside of people (land, safety, environmental, etc) is cheaper.

But hell... Let's blame the refugees. Yes. That is. Easy Peasy. Let's Make Canada Great Again.

Let's blame the refugees for the layoffs associated with the grounding of the 737 Max as well.

Here is the issue. High priced manufacturing jobs have moved to cheaper labour markets. Nothing you could do other than subsidize their wages. And every few years, kick in a few extra bucks.

I recall how NAFTA was going to kill Canada's wine industry if they had to compete on a global market. Gone Baby duck. Hello Ice wine.

Refugees and immigrates are needed for the lower paid jobs. This isn't a Canadian thing; but immigration in general.

And specific to this site, imagine what we would do without the Asian and EE ladies out there? Not too many Canadian girls out there. And what would they charge?

GM makes shitty vehicles compared to Toyota, Honda, VW. Granted all of these companies have had quality issues but GM and Chrysler still have a long ways to go to meet Toyota quality.

Funny, hey? No. Really, really sad. We propped up a dying Canadian industry. Eventually, the faint of Mexican workers will be similar to Canadian/US workers as global companies look to find cheaper labour pools.

I actually agree that Canada should not accept refugees coming from the U.S. or any other western country. But the policy of accepting genuine refugees cannot be realistically be said to affect out employment picture. 2016 was one of the highest years and I think we accepted less that 30k. Of those, many were children and they're coming from places like Syria, Afghanistan, Myanmar, in other words, pretty desperate conditions. Those numbers cannot have a huge effect on employment here.

The GM Oshawa situation is both sad and infuriating. If we do the math from the time GM was given the "rescue" money, and the small portion GM has paid back until now, the shortfall amounts to the Canadian taxpayers paying the wages in Oshawa for GM since the "loan" was given !
Then GM reneges on the the promise to stay and provide jobs in Canada.
As much as I think the C8 Corvette is a fantastic piece of engineering and a world class supercar, great value for the money, I can't bring myself to deal with GM.

Its called humanity....son.we here in Canada have what i call...the winning the ovarian lottery.We were born at the right time in the right place.But if we were in these countries, we would want out as well...you cant blame them.Some will be murdered if they stay were they are....just be thankful to God...you have food, warmth and shelter and dont fear sharing the good life with a family with kids, they did not ask them upon themselves

I am sad that these people have lost their jobs and some of their futures are a challenge but I am not sorry about GM. I am concerned for the people not the products or GM. There is a big difference.
