Opening & Closing Chakras

This is not exactly massage related, but in a way it could be, depending on the answer to my theory. I am not ultra-knowledgeable about energy work related to chakras. However, I have been part of a martial art that is considered to be a very old art. It has Qi Gong as part of the art and I know that when doing those exercises, one can close off certain chakras to enhance the ability for the artist to be more effective by decreasing the sub-concious (I guess that is the best way to put that).

Additionally, in doing certain medical forms of QiGong, part of the work is opening/closing certain chakras. Which increases healing potential.

That, obviously, was not the part about massage, but begins to lay out my thought process.

Next, I have been told by someone who was once close to a Catholic priest and it was mentioned that part of the cross sign that is made over the head, stomach and sides of body (I'm not Catholic, so I don't know what you call that) closes certain chakras... possibly this came from a long long time ago from and for certain prayer rituals and or reasons to open/close the body in a certain way when praying.

That, also, was not the part about massage.

But, my theory is that if one waves their arms/hands/fingers in certain motions, it would be possible that the chakras could affected --- even if the individual did not have "intent". And this adds to the thought that maybe an MT or bodyworker could also affect the chakras "as a side-effect" when working with a client. It sounds crazy, but at the same time, not. You know what I mean?

That's the part about massage.

Does anyone have any kind of information on this? Any thoughts? Any general information on how the chakras "work"? Any charts? Etc.???????

I don't know much about energy work, either, so may not be the best one to answer this, BUT.....

You mentioned intent in your post, and, to me, that is the heart of the matter. It seems unlikely that, without the intent, you would not create any more change than, for instance, walking by someone in a certain direction. Of course, I could be completely off base on this. I just am of the opinion that intent is a major factor for change in much of what we do.

It has been my experience, both personal and professional, that intent is more potent than anyone gives it credit for. When my nieces were very small [4 & 6 yrs old] I had a horrid migraine while watching them for a week. They told me to lay on the couch and they would help me feel better. [This was waaaaay before massage school.] The little charmers proceeded to put cool cloths on my forehead and just lay their tiny hands on my head, chest and shoulders. Then they said, "We want Aunt Jack to feel better" over and over and over.... until they got tired and I began to get sleepy. They "intended me better". They didn't know energy work from a box of crayons. Nor did they know anything about massage or any form of bodywork. They just wanted me better.

Having studied an energetic healing form based on Aikido and Karate-do, I know it is entirely possible to redirect/open/close both chakras and small tsubos throughout the body. The intention to do so is as necessary as learning the skill to do so.
