Hi Everyone, just to give my feedback, I am Australian of Scottish and English parents and I was living and working in Germany and France for five years and whilst there, I visited Riga on many occasions from August 1998 being my first visit up untill August 2004 being my last visit and on one occasion living there for three months.

To begin with I found the women there who where non pros to be extremely friendly and picked up all the time as well as having a couple who I saw on a regular basis.

Towards the end of the five years, IMHO the place deteriorated, became a hell of a lot more expensive and the girls where far less foriegner friendly and I think that this was due to a number of things.

More tourists knowing about the place and arriving in their droves and many local girls who where a hell of a lot more financially disadvantaged being taken advantage of by foriegn men with the promise of marriage etc that never delivered.

Another one being that where people are spending money, the local mafia in one way or another want their cut. EG I was drinking in a bar called Groks which was downstairs from what is now the Roxy club. Back then it was called the Pepsi Forum.

A Norwegien friend of mine was chatting up one of the local non pro girls when two pros got stuck in and attacked the girl he was chatting up. Then a huge russian came over and some words where exchanged they left, she then explained that the problem is that if the girls are going to go with foriegn men then they think that they should be doing if for money with the local mafia acting as their pimps for protection and the girls who are non pros and giving it away are taking their business away from them.

Another factor is that a hell of a lot of local guys where working either outside of Latvia or had good jobs legally or illegally who where making good money. When this happens they can sweet talk the girls into believing that they do not need foriegn guys anymore.

As far as the country being in economic turmoil now, the fact that they are now in the EU, gives them more alternatives to finding a nice foriegn Boyfriend or husband such as going to UK to work.

As far as them being racist goes, I had a very good friend that I used to hang out with often who was African american and he was in the US army stationed at the US embassy in Riga.

He had his fair share of women and whilst out on the town together, we never encountered one bit of Racism. We mainly hung out around the old town in bars such as Paddy Wheelans Irish pub and the Dickens Inn as well as a few clubs in town.

Another thing to remember, Riga has a large number of women infected with HIV and I was lead to believe that this was caused by Riga being the second most Gay friendly city to Kiev in the old soviet union. A Latvian friend of mine advised me that this was not the case at all. It was a lot of the women there where f***ing the African students. So much for it being racist.

I am not to sure what the smaller towns in Latvia are like now, Ventspils and Leipaja I had great times there in 2003 as I wanted to get out of Riga, however when I started going to Lativa I was warned by a fellow Aussie who lived there at the time is that Latvia was one of the easiest countries in the world to pick up local good looking women but was also one of the easiest to get your head kicked in by jealous local guys.

I now go to Thailand regularly as I am living back in Australia and I find Pattaya far better than what Riga was when I was there in 2003 but as far as 1998 goes it would have competed heavily for my tourist dollar.

And it's never just one guy who will attack you either, it is a bunch of 'em. They carry screwdrivers, box cutters, knives and shit like that and the danger is real. I've been ther many times. I've seen it.

Don't be surprised if your post telling everybody how much they just loooove blacks over there never gets written. Not because you found out that there ain't no love for you there, but because you never came back.

Just read a report that up to 10% of russian youngsters in Latvia are HIV positive. The authorities do not seem to care, because the Latvians hate the Russians.
All of eastern europe has more then its fair share of super racist peole. They lived so many years behind the curtain, but even today, there is a very limited exposure to non-white people.

I have been to Poland twice and never had a problem. Im of Indian origin. Most people treated me very nicely. (polands largest exporter is Mittal steel ).
