I tried out the new HRC 2 nights ago, im an expat, been here two years - no way a cheap charlie, I appreciate quality food and am more than happy to pay a premium... have to say though the food was really disappointing, had the mushroom burger (630 baht plus 17% tax/service) and the sirloin steak (930 baht +) - both tasteless, tough and forgettable. What was even worse was the 207 baht bottle of 'fiji' water, would probably cost 12 baht in 7/11... i couldnt actually believe it was on the bill!! thats 207 baht for cheap water plus 17%!!... 242 baht!

On a plus its really well done out, the band was good if not a little loud while trying to talk over dinner.

Other things like the only sauce offered to us was ketchup, drinks arriving at the same time as the meal etc were also adding to a poor night out, was in HRC Kuala Lumpur 2 weeks ago... and it was brilliant! Maybe it takes time to get up to scratch... although its not as if HRC havent done this a 100 times before...

Went for a bite to eat in one of their restaurants , Mo's Diner , cheapest hamburger £13.75 (740 Baht) and most expensive "Harrod's Burger" £16.75 (904 Baht).

Thats a bit silly to say, how would they even know? after like 5 days of being open...

A supplier can set ANY price he wants (Yes even 1 million baht for a burger if he wants), its the amount of eventual purchasers that will define if that price is feasible or not. That's why it's called supply and demand, and not just "supply".

A lot of "posh" restaurants don't do so well here because people like to 'eat local' or at least think they are, Take a look at the opening night photo's. It's hardly ram packed is it?

We already have reports of them not having the food actually on the menu in stock within the first week and a tepid opening, it's not exactly a rampant start.

I'm based in Macau and City of Dreams opened a HRH about 4 months ago - and yeah sure some things are pricey but its a destination - a must see - and actually the beer is reasonable at around 40 HK per bottle. Also they have a pool bar that in summer transforms into live outdoor music and pool parties - all for a reasonable outlay.
I'm in Patong over NYE so I will check it out - maybe have a beer - clearly a few drinks wont break the bank.

A Beef Burger at Molly Malones cost 275 Baht, according to the website menu, but if you include the toppings you want like egg, bacon, ham, cheese, it easily adds up to over 400 Baht.

I checked the menu at HRC in KL last night, most expensive item is pepper steak for 60 rm. So I had a pepper steak and pint of beer 17 rm, plus added taxes the bill was 88 rm.

Burgers were around 25-35 rm or similar.

Yes Bill, but Patong isn't Vegas...although there are many establishments trying to turn into this kind of place....Lets face it, people love to be "part of something."...they like fads and gimmicks and will be led to pay outrageous prices just to be able to say that they were there...Lets not forget that one of the biggest reasons we all settled in Phuket in the first place, was because of its affordability....good, fun, inexpensive living....Phuket/Patong has distanced itself from that as that no longer exists....I agree with you that if people want to pay, they will...no doubt....But come on...It's still just a burger!...maybe call it a fancy burger....but is any burger worth 500 baht?...Is this what they mean by "progress?"

Traitor, nothing against the concept, I quite like the TGI in KL and even eat at the hard rock (I think). However the guys who built this place where a bunch of numpties, they've already had 1 fire whilst building it and I've seen back of house so will not be eating there.

but we don't earn pounds/quid here; I've stopped converting back to either NZ or Oz $ my former countries.
Earn locally, spend locally, there's little point in comparing.
My lunch today was 55 baht, incl 15 for the Coca Cola. I knew what I was getting; we spent 2600 for 2 recently and that was a good meal too.
If I want a Guinness - and I do sometimes - I still have the choice at 425 HRC or I think about 220 in Karon; HRC is likely a better set-up environment than the Irish bar that i like to drink at occasionally, someone has to pay for that.
