Yes because I don't identify as a Republican, Conservative, Libertarian, right winger, center right or any other label that tries to limit people by putting them in a box. If I am any of the above based on my set of beliefs, so be it. At the end of the day, I vote for whoever I feel has my best interests. Donald Trump is that guy to me. I will never vote Joe Biden because he represents the status quo like Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer or even Republicans like Dubya or Mitt Romney. It's laughable that people actually see any of these dinosaurs as agents of change. What makes them anymore believable today than they were 40+ years ago?

Pelosi, alongide her nephew, Gov. Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris have run the once beautiful San Francisco into the ground. Homeless people all around defacating anywhere and everywhere while leaving needles on the ground. Taxes up the ass. Gang violence. Illegal immigrants running rampant due to San Fran being a 'sanctuary city'. And these are the so-called superheroes that will save America from the evil Orange Man? Why? Because they use the right words and a softer tone when they speak unlike Trump who's openly abrasive, arrogant and self-absorbed? No wonder it's easy to paint Trump as the bad guy and an easy scapegoat for everything that goes wrong.

Anyway. Just my opinion. I see where you're coming from and everything you've said seems well thought out so I'll just agree to disagree.

I disagree this being the choice of lessor of two evils, amigo. Trump is the embodiment of everything that democracy does not represent. He has completely dishonoured the relatively proud legacy of the Republican party and is using increased presidential powers and his notoriety to undermine the institutions that have kept America, for all its failings, relatively stable and evolving for 200 years. Biden does not represent anywhere near that level of menace. Nor for that matter do the most extreme leftist elements of the Democrats. At least the Dems are still expressing support for the fundamentals of the constitution. Trump only cares about staying in power because of his out-of-control ego and narcissism and for long enough for the statute of limitations to expire on his numerous tax frauds.

Most people who don't follow American politics or just politics in general usually lean to the left. Like an electronic device on factory settings, the uninformed mind of a casual follower of politics is programmed to believe in liberal politicians, idealogies and propaganda. There are intelligent liberals who are able to dissect and criticize Trump's policies because they are educated about the issues and therefore have principles that they stick by through thick and thin. Kudos to them.

Sadly, the loudest ones are those who are only liberals by default. These are the ones who only read the headline, not the entire article. They only listen to sound bytes, not the whole interview/speech/debate. They take the mainstream media at face value and dismiss any other outlet as fringe propaganda. They downplay discussions that challenge conventional belief as conspiracy theories because they're too intellectually lazy to think outside the box. Their opinions are formulated by what they hear from CNN, MSNBC, CBS, The New York Times, Washington Post and Hollywood celebrities who for the most part are just as uneducated as they are. There are so many things to criticize Trump for and yet none of these sheep have a single legitimate critique of the president. It's all ad hominen attacks and common buzz words they hear from the media like 'racist', 'fascist', 'sexist', 'xenophobe' blah blah blah. Orange man bad, he's racist because he wants to build a wall, he said ALL Mexicans are rapists, he brags about sexually assaulting women... any other lame attack?

You are pretty exactly describing most everyone I know. I did (and do) support things like state funded healthcare, a reasonably limited right to abortion, a science based approach to caring for the environment, a safety net for those who can't work or have fallen on hard times...and that is why I view what has happened to left of centre parties with utter dismay. Trump has traumatized them to a degree where they seem to have declared war on rational thought. The blinkered majority on the left has not yet realized that the wheels have come off the chariot. The craziest stuff you could only hear on campus just a few short years ago is now mainstream.

My best friend is a prof at a U.S. University. In a friendship that stretches more than 30 years this is the first time we've disagreed on anything of substance. And more surprising to me...we can't even talk about it. Recently, I challenged him to an experiment. I asked him if he would be willing to maintain in front of his friends that Trump had done a few small things that weren't so bad, like killing the Iranian terrorist or the recent progress in the middle east. I told him if he would do that, I'd fully get in my conservative friends' faces and tout Biden as the better pick. My friend refused immediately. He admitted right off the bat that he could not say any such thing and survive socially (perhaps not even professionally) in the current environment. I pointed out that I felt pretty confident I could say just about anything to my conservative friends and that they might argue or kid me, but they certainly wouldn't cut me off. That is currently one of the differences between the two sides. The woke will call you a racist or worse at the first sign of disagreement.

I too have friends whose economic and political views differ from mine, but who have also proven that they have a well-informed basis for their arguments, and hence merit respect. As societies both Canada and US should return to moderate mutual respect for the opposition's views, otherwise we risk mutual demonization and creating enemies of our fellow citizens. And that is playing into the hands of those who want to undermine democracy.

Four years later, they find themselves once again voting for a candidate that they don't believe in nor care for. Respect and freedom of expression during discourse are a two-way street and these radicals seem to have forgotten that. Their intolerance for even those willing to listen but in need of more time to process novel concepts (to them at least) has become insufferable to the point that I'm very embarrassed to admit my tolerance for them.
